The camera doesn't work in the video chat

Updated:

A black screen or 'camera not found' almost always comes down to permissions or another app using the camera. Go through these checks in order.

1. Allow the camera in your browser

Browsers ask for permission the first time. If you clicked 'Block', the site can't see the camera:

  1. Click the icon to the left of the address bar (padlock or settings icon)
  2. Find Camera and set it to Allow
  3. Reload the page

2. Close other apps using the camera

Only one app can use the camera at a time on many devices. Close Zoom, Teams, Skype, FaceTime or other browser tabs with video, then reload.

3. Check system permissions

SystemWhere to look
WindowsSettings › Privacy & security › Camera › allow apps and your browser
macOSSystem Settings › Privacy & Security › Camera › enable your browser
AndroidSettings › Apps › your browser › Permissions › Camera
iPhoneSettings › Safari (or your browser) › Camera › Allow

4. Still black?

  • Make sure the camera isn't covered by a privacy shutter
  • Try another browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge)
  • Restart the browser or the device
  • If the page itself doesn't load, see chat stuck on loading

Frequently asked questions

Why does the browser keep asking for camera access?

Some browsers only remember the permission for the current visit. Choose 'Always allow' for this site if the option appears.
