Three lines at once

An opener, a follow-up question and a plainer version of the same idea.

Five situations

First chat, casual talk, someone from another country, language practice, and a chat that went quiet.

Built for translation

The simpler version uses short, literal wording that machine translation handles well.

No pickup lines

Nothing about looks, no stereotypes, no lines you'd be embarrassed to send.

How to use the generator

The tool sits right above this text. It takes about five seconds, and you can use it before a chat or while one is open in another tab.

  1. Choose a situation: first chat, casual, other country, language practice or gone quiet.
  2. Tap Give me a line. You get an opener, a follow-up labelled "If she answers" and a simpler version.
  3. Not your style? Tap Another one until a line sounds like something you'd actually say.
  4. Tap Copy, then start the chat at the top of this page and paste or type it in your own words.
  5. When she replies, use the follow-up, or better, ask about the specific thing she just told you.

What each line is for

Every result has three parts because a conversation needs more than a first sentence. The opener gets you past the first silent seconds, the follow-up keeps things going, and the simpler version is your safety net when language gets in the way.

LineWhen to use itExample
OpenerThe first message or the first thing you say after helloWhat's the best thing that happened to you this week?
If she answersRight after her reply, to show you were listeningNice! Was that planned, or did it just happen?
Simpler versionWhen you write through translation or she's still learning EnglishWhat was good this week?

Which situation should you pick?

The situations match the moments people get stuck most often. If you're unsure, start with First chat: those lines work with anyone.

How to adapt a line to the person in front of you

A generated line is a starting point, not a script. On video you can see and hear things a phrase bank can't: the room she's in, the time of day, her mood, the music in the background. One small detail turns a generic question into a real one.

Use what's visible and neutral. Comment on a guitar on the wall, a cup of coffee or a sunny window, never on her body or looks. If the conversation is already moving, skip the generator and ask about what she just said.

Hi! What's the best part of your day so far?

Honestly, I just finished a long exam. So, now 😄

Congratulations! What was the exam about?

Chemistry. I never want to see another formula.

Fair enough. What are you doing to celebrate?

  • Swap in a detail: "What are you up to this evening?" becomes "Is that coffee at 10pm? Long night ahead?"
  • Match her energy: if she's relaxed and joking, keep it light; if she's tired, ask something easy.
  • Answer your own question too. Sharing a little of your day makes it a conversation, not an interview.
  • Use her answer, not the next line. Our guide to conversation starters explains why the second question matters more than the first.

Using the lines with translation

On WomChat the messages you write in the chat are translated automatically into your partner's language. Voice is not translated or subtitled, so when you don't share a language the written chat carries the conversation. More on that in video chat with translation.

Machine translation does best with short, literal sentences. That's why every result includes a simpler version: one idea per sentence, common words, no slang. The same advice appears in official plain language guidance: short, familiar words are easier to understand, and they are also easier for a translator to get right.

What city are you in?

¿En qué ciudad estás?

I'm in Valencia. Do you know it?

Estoy en Valencia. ¿La conoces?

Only from photos. What should I eat there?

Solo por fotos. ¿Qué debería comer allí?

  • Write complete sentences: "What do you do for work?" instead of "wbu, work?"
  • Avoid idioms like "what's the tea" or "break a leg". They often come out word for word.
  • Use names of places, foods and hobbies; they usually survive translation intact.
  • Add an emoji when tone matters, because irony rarely translates.

What to do if a line falls flat

Some openers get a one-word answer, a confused look or nothing at all. That's normal and rarely about you: she may be distracted, the translation may have come out oddly, or the topic just didn't land.

  1. Check the translation first. If she looks puzzled, rephrase with the simpler version instead of repeating the same words. Our guide on fixing translation misunderstandings has more fixes.
  2. Switch topics, don't push. Tap Another one in the gone-quiet situation and try a different angle.
  3. Share something about yourself, then ask. "I just got back from a run. Did you do anything active today?" is easier to answer than a bare question.
  4. If the chat still doesn't click, say a friendly goodbye and move on. Matching is random, so the next person may be a much better fit.

What kind of lines you'll get

The phrase bank is written by hand. Every line is meant to be something a friendly stranger could say without making anyone uncomfortable. Small talk is conversation about unimportant things, and that's the point: low-pressure topics give both people room to relax before anything deeper.

  • Questions about her day, plans, music, food, travel, work or hobbies
  • Curiosity about where she lives without assuming anything about her country
  • Easy questions for language practice that welcome mistakes
  • Gentle resets for when the conversation stalls

Try your line in a real chat

Once you have an opener you like, start the chat at the top of this page. WomChat runs in your browser on phone or desktop, connects you one-to-one with a random person, and you can start for free. If it's your first time, how WomChat works walks you through camera permissions, translation and the skip and report buttons.

Keep the generator open in another tab if it helps. After a few chats you'll probably find you need it less and less, which is exactly the goal.

Frequently asked questions

Is the conversation starter generator free?

Yes. It's free, works in your browser and doesn't need an account or any personal information.

Can I use these lines on other video chat sites?

Yes. The lines are general and polite, so they work in any video or text chat. The simpler versions are especially useful wherever messages are translated.

Should I copy the line exactly?

You can, but changing a word or adding a detail from the chat makes it sound like you. Treat the line as a starting point and follow her answers.

Why is there a simpler version?

Short, literal sentences translate more accurately and are easier for someone still learning English. Use it when you write through translation or when she looks unsure.

What if she doesn't answer my opener?

Try one more line from a different angle or share something about yourself first. If the chat still doesn't click, say goodbye politely and start a new one.
