Why is nobody available on random video chat?
A long wait usually has one of two causes: the chat is still looking for someone to pair you with, or something on your side (camera permission, connection or browser) is stopping the chat from starting. The checks below help you tell which one it is in a couple of minutes, so you don't sit in front of a screen that was never going to connect.
1. Is it a matching wait or an error?
On a random video chat you don't pick the person or the country. WomChat pairs you at random with someone who is starting a chat at the same moment, so how quickly that happens depends on who else is online right then. We don't publish live user counts, and you shouldn't trust any site that promises an exact number of people waiting for you.
A technical problem looks different. The table below shows the signs that usually point to one or the other.
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Your own camera preview works and the chat keeps looking for a partner | Normal matching wait | Give it a little longer, then try the time-of-day tips below |
| Black preview, no preview at all, or a camera or microphone warning | Permission or device problem | Check camera not working and microphone not working |
| The page never finishes loading or freezes | Connection, extension or browser | Go to chat stuck on loading |
| It connects for a second and then drops, again and again | Unstable connection or VPN | Check steps 3 and 4 on this page |
| It works on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data | Network restriction or data saver | See Wi-Fi works but mobile data doesn't |
2. Check that your own camera starts first
A random video chat can only pair you once your camera and microphone are available to the page. If the browser is still waiting for permission, or the permission was blocked earlier, the chat may look as if it is searching when in fact it can't send any video. Google's own help page for Chrome warns that sites without camera access may not work, for example you won't be able to join a video call.
Quick way to rule this out:
- Open our webcam and mic test in the same browser
- Allow camera and microphone when the browser asks
- If you see yourself and the mic meter moves, your devices are fine and the wait is probably a matching wait
- If the preview is black or the browser never asks, read what camera and microphone permission allows and fix the permission first
3. Rule out the connection
Live video needs a steady connection in both directions. A weak signal can let the page load while the video itself never gets through, which feels exactly like waiting for someone who never arrives.
- Open another site that streams video. If it buffers too, the problem is the network, not the chat
- Move closer to your router, or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to compare
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups or streaming on other devices sharing the same Wi-Fi
- Restart the router if every site has been slow for a while
4. Turn off VPNs, blockers and data saver for a moment
Some VPNs, ad blockers and privacy extensions block the parts of the page that carry live video. Data saver modes on phones can also restrict what a browser is allowed to do in the background. None of these are bad tools, but they are the most common reason a chat page loads normally and then never connects.
Disable them for this site only, reload, and try once more. If the chat starts, you can decide which tool to keep switched off while you use video chat. If you were using a VPN for privacy reasons, our article on whether someone can see your IP in video chat explains what a chat partner can and can't see.
5. Update or switch the browser
Video chat relies on recent browser features. An outdated browser, or a browser built into another app, may load the page but fail when the video starts. Update Chrome, Safari, Firefox or Edge, then try again. Google explains how to check for updates in Update Google Chrome.
If you opened the link from Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Telegram or another app, you are probably inside that app's built-in browser. Open the page in Safari or Chrome instead; video chat in in-app browsers shows how to recognise that situation.
6. When it really is a matching wait
If your preview works, your connection is fine and the chat is simply still looking, the wait comes down to timing. WomChat connects you with women from more than 100 countries, and each country has its busy hours and quiet hours. Because matching is random, you can't choose a country to shorten the wait, but you can choose when you try.
- Try again at a different time of day; evenings in other time zones may not match your own evening
- Keep the tab open and in front. Phones may pause pages that are in the background
- Avoid reloading over and over. Each reload starts the search again from the beginning
- If a conversation ends quickly, that is part of random chat; see why people skip in video chat
