Video chat works on Wi-Fi but not on mobile data

Updated:

If the chat works on Wi-Fi, your camera, microphone and browser are fine; the difference is how your phone treats mobile data. The usual causes are a browser that isn't allowed to use mobile data, a data-saving mode, a VPN or carrier restriction, or a weak signal.

1. Confirm it really is the mobile data connection

Before changing settings, make the comparison clean. Turn Wi-Fi off completely, not just disconnected from one network, and keep the same browser and page. If the chat fails with Wi-Fi off and works the moment you turn it back on, the checks on this page apply. If it fails on both, start with chat stuck on loading instead.

  1. Turn off Wi-Fi in the phone's quick settings
  2. Open another site that plays video; if it doesn't load, the mobile connection itself is down
  3. Open WomChat in Safari or Chrome and allow camera and microphone
  4. Note where it stops: the page doesn't load, the camera starts but nobody connects, or video starts and then freezes

2. Is your browser allowed to use mobile data?

Both iPhone and Android let you block mobile data for individual apps. If your browser is on that list, it works on Wi-Fi and fails everywhere else, which is exactly this symptom.

On iPhone, go to Settings › Cellular (or Mobile Data) and scroll to the list of apps. Apple notes that when cellular data is off for an app, iPhone uses only Wi-Fi for it (Apple Support). Make sure Safari, Chrome or whichever browser you use is switched on.

On Android, open Settings › Apps › your browser › Mobile data (the exact names vary by phone maker) and check that mobile data and background data are allowed.

3. Data-saving modes

Data-saving modes are designed to make apps use less mobile data, and live video is one of the heaviest things a phone can do. They don't always block video outright, but they can interfere with it.

SettingWhere to lookWhat to try
Low Data Mode (iPhone)Settings › Cellular › Cellular Data Options › Data Mode (Apple Support)Switch to Standard while you chat
Data Saver (Android)Settings › Network & internet › Data Saver (Pixel Phone Help)Turn it off, or give your browser unrestricted data
Browser data saverYour browser's own settings, if it has a data-saving or lite modeTurn it off for the chat site
Battery saverPhone's battery settingsTurn it off; it can limit background activity and network use

4. VPNs, private DNS and APN settings

A VPN that behaves well on home Wi-Fi can struggle on mobile networks, and some VPN apps only switch on automatically when you leave Wi-Fi. Turn the VPN off for a test, then try the chat again. The same goes for a custom private DNS setting on Android.

The APN (access point name) is the setting your phone uses to connect to your carrier's data network. Carriers normally set it automatically. Only change it if your carrier tells you to; if mobile data works for other sites, the APN is almost certainly not the cause.

  • Disable the VPN or any always-on VPN profile for one test
  • On Android, set Private DNS back to automatic for one test
  • If you recently swapped SIM or eSIM and nothing loads on mobile data, ask your carrier to check the data settings

5. Carrier plan and network restrictions

Some mobile plans limit speed after a certain amount of data, restrict video quality, or handle video traffic differently. Others have parental controls or content filters switched on at the account level. These are set by your carrier, not by your phone, so the phone settings above won't change them.

Check your data balance in the carrier's app, and if the chat still fails on mobile data while working on Wi-Fi, ask the carrier whether a filter or restriction is active on your line. If you're abroad, check that data roaming is allowed and that your plan covers the country.

6. Signal strength and network type

A page can load on a weak signal and still fail once live video starts, because video needs a steady connection in both directions. Look at the signal bars and the network type shown at the top of the screen.

  • Move near a window or step outside to see if the chat starts
  • If the phone keeps switching between network types, try again where the signal is stable
  • Turn airplane mode on for ten seconds and off again to reconnect to the network
  • Close other apps that upload in the background, such as photo backups

7. Still not working?

Make sure you opened the page in Safari or Chrome, not inside another app; some in-app browsers behave differently on mobile networks. See video chat in in-app browsers. If the camera never starts, the issue isn't the network: check camera not working. And if everything loads but you're waiting a long time for a partner, read why nobody is available.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the page load on mobile data but the video doesn't start?

Loading a page needs little data; live video needs a steady connection both ways. A weak signal, a data-saving mode or a VPN can let the page through while the video fails.

Do I need to change my APN to use video chat?

Almost never. If other sites work on mobile data, leave the APN alone. Only change it on your carrier's instructions.

Can my carrier block video chat?

Carriers can apply filters, speed limits or video restrictions on some plans. If the phone settings on this page are fine, ask your carrier whether anything is active on your line.
