Video chat credits vs subscriptions: how to compare the real cost
Credits (or minutes, tokens, gems) are pay-per-use: you buy a pack and spend it as you chat. A subscription is a periodic payment for a set time, whether you use it or not. Which is cheaper depends on how many minutes you really chat, and on details like expiry, renewal and currency that never appear in the headline price.
Key takeaways
- Credits suit occasional use; a subscription only gets cheaper once you chat past a break-even point.
- Always convert any offer into a cost per minute you actually use, not the minutes you hope to use.
- Credits that expire before you spend them raise your real price per minute.
- With subscriptions, the renewal price, the renewal date and the cancel path matter more than the first payment.
- Currency conversion and VAT can change the final charge, so check the payment screen, not just the price list.
Credits vs subscriptions: what's the difference?
With credits, you pay in advance for a quantity: a number of minutes, or a balance of tokens that paid features consume. Nothing more is charged until you buy another pack. With a subscription, you pay for a period, such as a week, a month or several months, and many plans renew automatically.
This article is about comparing the two once you've decided to pay. If you're still deciding whether to pay at all, start with our guide to free vs paid video chat, and look at what the free part of a service really gives you first.
| Model | You pay for | Your cost depends on | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Credits / minutes | A pack you spend as you go | How many minutes you use, and how fast features burn credits | Credits expiring or not refundable |
| Subscription | Access for a fixed period | How much you use it during that period | Automatic renewal you forget about |
| Hybrid | A period plan that includes some minutes, plus extra packs | Both of the above | Not knowing which part runs out first |
How to work out your real cost per minute
The only fair way to compare is to turn every offer into one number: what you pay for each minute you'll actually chat. The numbers below are hypothetical, chosen only to show the method. They are not the prices of WomChat or any real site.
- Write down the total you'd pay, including any VAT or fees shown at checkout. Hypothetical example: a pack of 100 credits for $20.
- Find out how many credits one minute costs. If 1 credit buys 1 minute, that pack gives 100 minutes.
- Divide price by minutes: $20 / 100 = $0.20 per minute.
- For a subscription, estimate your real monthly minutes honestly. Hypothetical: $15 per month and you chat about 30 minutes, so $15 / 30 = $0.50 per minute.
- Find the break-even point by dividing the subscription price by the credit price per minute: $15 / $0.20 = 75 minutes a month. Below that, credits win; above it, the subscription does (if it really covers unlimited chat).
- Repeat the sum for any feature that costs extra credits per minute. If a feature costs 2 credits a minute, that same pack becomes $0.40 per minute.
Which is cheaper for light, regular and heavy users?
Using the same hypothetical numbers ($0.20 per minute with credits, $15 a month for a subscription), here's how the monthly bill changes with use. Again, this is an illustration of the method, not a real price list.
| Minutes per month | Credits cost | Subscription cost | Cheaper option |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | $6.00 | $15.00 ($0.50/min) | Credits |
| 75 | $15.00 | $15.00 ($0.20/min) | Break-even |
| 200 | $40.00 | $15.00 ($0.075/min) | Subscription |
What to check before you buy credits
A low price per credit can hide conditions that push your real cost up. Check these before paying:
- Expiry. If you buy 100 credits for $20 but only use 40 before they expire, you've paid $0.50 per minute, not $0.20 (hypothetical figures).
- Refunds. Can unused credits be refunded? Some services say all credits are final.
- Bonus vs paid credits. Free or bonus credits often expire sooner and are never refundable.
- Conversion rate. Does one credit always equal one minute, or do some features cost more?
- Account deletion. On some sites, closing your account wipes your remaining balance.
- Pack sizes. Bigger packs are usually cheaper per credit, but only if you'll really use them before they expire.
What to check before you subscribe
Subscriptions look simple, but most bad surprises come from renewals. Before you confirm, look for the answers to these:
- Does the plan renew automatically? If yes, when, and at what price? Introductory prices often differ from the renewal price.
- Is a 'per month' price really billed monthly, or charged in one payment for several months?
- Where is the cancel option? Find it before you buy. If you pay through an app store, Apple explains how to cancel a subscription from Apple and Google how to cancel on Google Play.
- What happens after you cancel? On many services you keep access until the end of the period you've paid.
- Does the plan include minutes, or only features? A 'Premium' plan with a few bonus minutes is a hybrid, not unlimited chat.
- Set a reminder two or three days before the renewal date.
Currency, VAT and refund rules
Many video chat services charge in US dollars. If your card is in another currency, your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign transaction fee. Hypothetical example: a $9.99 charge with a 3% card fee becomes about $10.29 before conversion.
VAT can also be added depending on your country, so the price on a list may not be the price on the payment screen. Trust the last screen before you confirm.
Refund rights depend on where you live and on the seller's terms. In the EU you normally have a 14-day right of withdrawal for online purchases, but the EU's Your Europe guide explains that it can be lost for digital content you started streaming after expressly agreeing to lose it. Read refund rules before you buy, not after.
Real examples, as of October 2026
Here is how a few real services describe their models, checked in October 2026. Terms change, so treat this as a dated snapshot and check the current terms before buying.
WomChat's video chat partner uses a hybrid model. Its terms listed minutes at US$0.50 each, in packs of 10 minutes for $5, 60 for $25 and 360 for $100. By our arithmetic, that's $0.50, about $0.42 and about $0.28 per minute. Premium packages were also listed, for example 1 month at $9.99 with 20 free minutes, 3 months at $7.99 a month ($23.97 in total) with 70 free minutes, and 6 months at $4.99 a month ($29.94) with 100 free minutes. The terms say payments are in USD, VAT may be added for some countries and prices can change at any time without prior warning. Unused purchased minutes can be refunded, while bonus and spent minutes can't. This is the partner's published list, not a WomChat offer; our pricing page explains how it applies when you use WomChat.
LuckyCrush sells per-minute credits rather than a subscription. Its terms (archived copy from April 2025) say credits are valid for 365 days, are final and non-refundable, and are lost if the account is deleted. No prices were published on its public pages. See our LuckyCrush alternative page.
Azar combines a virtual currency called Gems, which its terms say expire 5 years after purchase, with subscriptions called Azar Core and Azar Max on Android and the web. More on our Azar alternative page.
Common mistakes when comparing video chat prices
Most overspending comes from a handful of habits. Avoid these and you'll rarely pay more than you meant to:
- Comparing a monthly price with a pack price directly, without converting both to cost per minute.
- Buying the biggest credit pack for the discount, then letting half of it expire.
- Reading 'per month' on a multi-month plan and missing that you pay it all upfront.
- Forgetting that bonus minutes usually expire and can't be refunded.
- Paying for a filter you could have lived without; our article on whether gender filters are free or paid compares services.
- Ignoring the currency, then being surprised by the amount on your bank statement.
How paying works when you use WomChat
WomChat is free to start from your browser, with no download, and an account is optional until you want settings or paid features. Paid features are sold inside the chat by our third-party video chat technology partner, which handles accounts, payments, renewal and cancellation under its own terms. The price is shown before you buy, and WomChat doesn't charge you or store your card.
Before spending anything, try a few conversations; how WomChat works walks you through your first one. When you're ready to compare, the pricing page explains minutes, Premium, renewal and refunds, and our terms of use cover the rest. If you're weighing other sites too, the video chat comparison shows which are free, paid or mixed.
