Sometimes. A few random video chats let you pick a country or region, but on most of them that option is part of a paid plan, and even then it's often a preference rather than a guarantee. Language filters and automatic translation solve a different problem, and for many people they're the more useful tool. WomChat's matching is random, so you can't choose a country there; here's how the options compare.

Key takeaways

  • Country, location and language filters are three different things, and services mix up the names.
  • As of October 2026, location filters on Chatrandom, Chatspin and Azar are paid, and Shagle's FAQ lists them as a premium feature.
  • Shagle says its country choice is a priority that can fall back to any country, so a filter doesn't always mean a guaranteed match.
  • Time zones decide who's online, so the hour you chat matters as much as any filter.
  • WomChat matches you at random with women from more than 100 countries and translates written messages, but you can't pick a country.

Can you really pick a country on random video chat?

On some services, yes. A country or region selector is one of the most common extras on random video chat sites, next to the gender filter. What surprises people is how often it costs money, and how loosely 'country filter' is defined.

Before comparing services, it helps to know what the different filters actually do. A lot of disappointment comes from paying for one kind of filter while expecting another.

Country, location and language filters: what's the difference?

These three get used almost interchangeably in app descriptions, but they're not the same thing. Here's how to read them:

  • Country filter: you pick a country from a list and the service tries to match you with people it places there, usually based on their connection. It doesn't tell you anything about the language they speak.
  • Location or region filter: broader or vaguer. Chatrandom's store listing describes it as limiting matches to a certain region. Sometimes it means a continent, sometimes 'near me'.
  • Language filter: matches people who use, or say they use, a certain language. Camsurf, for example, says you can filter connections by location or language.
  • Translation: not a filter at all. It lets you talk with anyone, wherever they are, by translating messages between languages.

Which random video chats let you choose a country?

We only list what each service confirms on its own pages or store listings, or what we recorded on our comparison pages. Where the official wording is unclear, we say so. Prices are left out because they vary by country and app store.

The fine print: why a country filter isn't a promise

Shagle is unusually open about how its country choice works. Its FAQ explains that matching draws from a random pool of users and falls back to any country when nobody suitable is there. That's honest, and it's probably how many country filters behave behind the scenes, even when the sales page doesn't say so.

Camsurf goes the other way and keeps things simple. Its FAQ says you can choose a country from a dropdown or meet all users randomly, and that it has deliberately not built many filters so chats stay random. Our Camsurf alternative page has the rest of the details.

Azar sits in the middle: its Gems guide for Azar Web says Gems are used to refine region and gender preferences. In short, on Azar choosing where your matches come from is mostly something you pay for. Our Azar alternative and Shagle alternative pages cover both services in more depth.

  • Small countries can mean long waits, or a silent fallback to other countries.
  • Location is usually guessed from the connection, so travellers and people on VPNs can show up in the 'wrong' place.
  • A filter can't tell you whether the person speaks a language you share.
  • Paying for a country filter doesn't change who is online at that hour.

Time zones: the filter nobody talks about

The biggest factor in who you meet isn't a setting, it's the clock. When it's 11 pm where you are, it's breakfast time on the other side of the world, and the people online reflect that. If you want to meet people from a particular region, chatting during their evening helps more than most paid options.

A world clock such as timeanddate.com makes this easy to check. Here's a quick way to plan:

  1. Pick the region you're curious about, for example Latin America, Southeast Asia or Eastern Europe.
  2. Look up its UTC offset (Wikipedia's list of UTC offsets is handy) and compare it with yours.
  3. Aim for their early evening, roughly 7 to 10 pm local time, when most people are free.
  4. Try a few sessions at that hour on different days before you decide a service 'has nobody from there'.
  5. If the time doesn't work for you, try their weekend morning instead.

Translation: a better answer than a country filter?

Most people who want a specific country really want something else: to meet someone from a different culture, practise a language, or simply have a conversation that isn't with someone from their own city. Translation gets you most of that without narrowing who you can meet.

With automatic translation of written messages, you type in your language and the other person reads in theirs. You can open a chat with whoever appears and still understand each other. Voice isn't translated on WomChat, so you mix talking, gestures and the text chat, which turns out to be a fun way to connect. See how it works on our video chat with translation page, or read the practical guide to meeting women who speak other languages.

Hi! It's 9 pm here in Toronto. Where are you?

Merhaba! Burada, Toronto'da saat akşam 9. Sen neredesin?

İzmir! Burada sabahın dördü, uyuyamadım haha.

Izmir! It's four in the morning here, I couldn't sleep haha.

Four am! Then you deserve the best conversation of the night.

Sabahın dördü! O zaman gecenin en iyi sohbetini hak ediyorsun.

Can you choose a country on WomChat?

No, and we'd rather be clear about it. Matching on WomChat is random: you press start and you're paired one-to-one with a woman who's online, and WomChat has women from more than 100 countries. There's no country selector, free or paid.

What you get instead is translation of written messages built in from the first chat, so a random match from Colombia, Poland or the Philippines isn't a dead end because of language. Women's profiles are verified, human moderators remove bots and abusive accounts, and skip and report buttons are in every chat. It's free to start in your browser with no download, and an account is optional.

If choosing a country is the one feature you can't live without, a service from the table above may suit you better, and that's fine. If what you really want is variety and conversations across languages, random matching plus translation does the job well. You can compare other filters, like gender, in our guide to whether gender filters are free or paid.

Mistakes to avoid when chasing a specific country

A few habits waste time and money:

  • Paying for a country filter before checking whether people from that country are even online at your hour.
  • Assuming a country filter means a shared language. It doesn't.
  • Using a VPN to appear somewhere else. It can slow your video, and a service's terms may not allow it, so check first.
  • Opening with 'Where are you from?' and nothing else. Add something about yourself so it feels like a conversation, not a form.
  • Paying for the first plan you see. Compare prices, renewals and cancelling first; our free vs paid video chat guide shows how.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose a country on random video chat for free?

It depends on the service. Camsurf shows a country dropdown without stating a price on its official pages, while Chatrandom, Chatspin and Azar charge for location filters as of October 2026.

Does a country filter guarantee I'll meet someone from that country?

Not always. Shagle, for example, says its country choice is a priority and falls back to any country when nobody suitable is available.

Is a language filter the same as translation?

No. A language filter matches you with people who use a certain language, while translation lets you talk with anyone by converting messages between languages.

Can I choose a country on WomChat?

No. WomChat's matching is random, with women from more than 100 countries, and written messages are translated automatically so language isn't a barrier.

What's the best time to meet people from another continent?

Aim for their evening, roughly 7 to 10 pm local time. A world clock helps you work out what hour that is for you.
